Holistic Wellness Support During Cancer Care

A cancer diagnosis is life-changing, and the treatment journey that follows—whether chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy—often brings a range of physical and emotional challenges. While these treatments are necessary for fighting the disease, they can also cause side effects that impact daily life. This is where integrative, holistic wellness support can play an important complementary role.

What is Integrative Oncology?
Integrative oncology is a patient-centered, evidence-informed approach that combines conventional cancer treatments with mind-body practices, lifestyle modifications, and other supportive therapies. These approaches are used alongside standard medical care, not in place of it. Leading experts consistently emphasize that no alternative therapy has been proven to treat or cure cancer on its own.

Major cancer centers across the U.S. now offer integrative services. Data from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) show that 97% of member institutions provide nutritional and dietary services, 72% offer mind-body practices, and 69% provide acupuncture or acupressure. These services are supported by clinical practice guidelines from organizations like the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO), which recommend integrative approaches for managing symptoms like pain, anxiety, depression, and fatigue.

Common Treatment Side Effects and How Wellness Support Can Help
Patients undergoing cancer treatment often experience side effects such as persistent fatigue, sleep disturbances, nausea, appetite loss, pain, tingling or numbness, emotional distress, and unintended weight loss with muscle wasting. These symptoms can significantly reduce quality of life and, in some cases, become so severe that they interfere with completing the full course of treatment. Addressing them early and proactively is therefore crucial.

Research from the University of Rochester and other centers has shown that exercise can reduce fatigue among cancer patients, and that anti-nausea medication can help manage treatment-related nausea. Integrative approaches like acupuncture and acupressure have also been shown to help with chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

Evidence-Informed Integrative Approaches

Acupuncture and Integrative Care Modalities:
Acupuncture is one of the best-studied integrative therapies in oncology. The 2025 Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO)–ASCO guideline synthesis identifies acupuncture as evidence-based for pain, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, aromatase inhibitor-induced joint pain, post-treatment anxiety, hot flashes, and radiotherapy-induced dry mouth. Other supportive modalities including massage therapy, reflexology, acupressure, and hypnosis may also be recommended for pain, anxiety, or procedural discomfort when delivered by trained practitioners. All integrative therapies should be coordinated with the oncology team to ensure safety, particularly when there are concerns about low platelets, infection risk, or bone metastases.

Mind-Body Practices:
Meditation and yoga are among the most impactful mind-body therapies. The Society for Integrative Oncology has given meditation an “A” recommendation for improving quality of life and depression, and a “B” recommendation for anxiety and stress reduction . These practices help calm the mind, reduce stress, and build emotional resilience.

Exercise and Movement:
Regular physical activity during cancer treatment is strongly supported by the American Cancer Society, the American College of Sports Medicine and other expert groups. Exercise can reduce fatigue, improve mood, lessen pain, and may help decrease chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. Low-impact options like walking, swimming, yoga, and tai chi are excellent choices.

Nutrition:
A balanced, whole-food diet is foundational during cancer treatment. Many patients need more protein than usual—often up to 20–30% more—to help rebuild tissues and maintain muscle mass. Small, frequent meals can make it easier to manage nausea and early fullness, while working with an oncology-trained registered dietitian provides individualized guidance that takes symptoms, preferences, and cultural food patterns into account.

Supplement Safety:
Supplements require special caution. Many dietary supplements are not regulated like prescription drugs and are not routinely tested for safety, purity, or effectiveness. Some can interfere with cancer therapies—potentially reducing their benefit or increasing side effects. For example, certain high‑dose antioxidant supplements (such as large doses of vitamin C or vitamin E) may make some chemotherapy or radiation regimens less effective, and herbal products like St. John’s wort can alter how drugs are metabolized. Omega‑3 supplements can increase bleeding risk in people taking blood thinners or those with low platelets. Because of these risks, supplements should never be started, stopped, or changed without direct guidance from your oncology team.

When to Consult Your Oncology Team:

Always discuss any changes in diet, exercise, supplements, or complementary therapies with your oncology team before starting them. This includes:

Before taking any supplement, vitamin, or herbal product

If you experience new or worsening symptoms

If you have severe nausea or vomiting preventing fluid intake

If you notice unintentional weight loss of more than 5% of your body weight

The VELL Oncology Support program is designed to complement conventional medical treatment, not replace it. It provides supportive tools to help improve quality of life and ease the side effects of cancer therapies—always in close coordination with your oncology team. The goal is to help you navigate your everyday wellness journey and have more informed conversations with your healthcare providers.
